Background: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading crisis response agency, offering life-saving assistance and supporting recovery and reconstruction for people affected by war and natural disasters. IRC operates in various sectors including public health, education, livelihoods, women’s empowerment, youth development, and protection and promotion of rights. IRC Uganda has a head office in Kampala and field offices in Kiryandongo, Lamwo, Moroto, Kyaka, and West Nile.
Scope of Work: The Multimedia and Communications Officer will work under the direct supervision of the Deputy Project Coordinator – Project and Grants Management and in close collaboration with project workstreams. The role will support multimedia and communications aspects, external and internal communications, graphic design, content creation, and the implementation of digital solutions to enhance engagement for the PlayMatters project.
Specific Responsibilities:
Technical Implementation:
- Draft, edit, and distribute content for the PlayMatters website, blogs, press releases, media articles, and public materials.
- Produce visual content for project events, including flyers, digital invitations, posters, video teasers, and video recaps.
- Conduct client interviews to collect stories of change and case studies.
- Support video and photo coverage for project events.
- Collaborate with management to develop and implement effective communications strategies.
- Create and produce internal newsletters.
- Design promotional items like reports, PowerPoints, and other IEC materials.
- Coordinate identification and drafting of articles and success stories.
- Develop and roll-out communications, brand, and visibility concepts and materials.
- Identify multimedia content needs and opportunities in collaboration with consortium partners and technical leads.
- Share knowledge on design and communications activities with project staff.
- Monitor multimedia solutions and manage collected data.
Coordination and Partner/Stakeholder Relationships:
- Develop and maintain relationships with journalists from multiple media outlets.
- Ensure regular and accurate media coverage, particularly during special events.
- Work with consortium partners and technical leads to identify multimedia content development and dissemination needs.
Monitoring, Reporting, and Communication:
- Support advocacy activities and report writing.
- Maintain records of media coverage and collate analytics.
- Liaise with the MEAL team to monitor multimedia solutions and disseminate learnings.
- Manage relationships with partners in media-related activities.
Partnerships and Gender, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (GEDI):
- Support IRC partners as needed.
- Promote a safe and respectful environment by participating in safeguarding training.
Other Duties:
- Assist with other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
- Raise purchase requests as required.
- Work constructively within the team and take initiative on new tasks.
Qualifications:
Requirements:
- 1-2 years of relevant experience in communication, writing, graphic design, illustration, and audio-visual production.
- Strong team player with good writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
- Experience in writing press releases and communication stories.
- Proficiency in creative graphic design and video production software (e.g., Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Premier Pro, Final Cut Pro).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and using DSLR cameras.
- Good organizational skills, detail-oriented, and able to handle multiple deadlines.
- Understanding of the Uganda Education System and humanitarian contexts is an advantage.
- Ability to work in refugee contexts, promote teamwork, and handle pressure.
- Ability to engage and build relationships with local partner organizations.
- Maintain professional relations with team members, promoting a strong team spirit.
