Job Summary:
The Medical Officer is responsible for performing consultations in OPD and IPD units according to MoH protocols and clinical guidelines to diagnose, treat, and manage patients. This role involves performing surgeries within competency and controlling the rational distribution of medicines to improve patients’ health conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct OPD/IPD ward rounds to assess patient conditions, diagnose, prescribe treatments, and refer complicated cases as per clinical guidelines and hygiene protocols.
- Determine discharge or transfer timing for IPD patients, ensuring efficient referral management to minimize complications.
- Control the rational distribution of medicines and equipment, ensuring sterilization and good maintenance of medical tools.
- Inform patients and families about illnesses and treatments, ensuring understanding for informed consent and adherence.
- Record all medical activities on patient cards and registration books to ensure continuous patient treatment.
- Assist with and perform surgical interventions and clinical procedures within competency.
- Attend to emergency cases in the health facility.
- Participate in the recruitment of medical staff.
- Ensure adherence to hygiene standards and universal precautions, implementing and monitoring actions to reduce bio-hazard risks and improve infection control.
- Provide ongoing training for the medical/paramedical multidisciplinary team to optimize care quality.
- Collect and analyze epidemiological data, report any patient complications or medical errors to the Medical Coordinator.
- Ensure medical practices follow the highest levels of integrity and ethics according to professional and MTI Codes of Conduct.
- Set clear objectives for direct reports, provide mentorship, and facilitate capacity-building opportunities.
- Conduct performance evaluations and enforce disciplinary processes as per MTI policy.
- Ensure accurate data collection and report submission according to the schedule.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery required.
- Licenses and Certifications: Registration with Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council; valid practicing license required.
- Experience: 2 years in hospital practice related to primary health care, maternal and child health, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, and communicable diseases. Experience with international NGOs is an advantage.
Knowledge:
- Primary health care, maternal and child health, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, and communicable diseases.
- Professional clinical medicine principles, procedures, and techniques.
- Surgery methods and best practices.
- Medicines, hygiene management, and IPC protocols.
Skills:
- Applying clinical medicine principles and procedures in patient evaluation and treatment.
- Performing surgery within competency.
- Prescribing correct medication.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficient in both written and spoken English.
Abilities:
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information and adhere to professional codes of conduct.
- Treat all patients and staff with respect, without prejudice.
- Provide high-quality, ethical, compassionate care prioritizing patient needs.
- Maintain detailed records with high accuracy.
